Mercedes S63 AMG

Mercedes S63 AMGThe facelifted Mercedes S63 AMG loses AMG’s 5.4L M113 in favor of the newer M156 6.2L V8 used in the S63 AMG, CLK63 AMG and C63 AMG. It produces 525 PS at 6800 rpm and 630Nm of torque at 5200 rpm. It can accelerate from rest to 100 km/h (62mph) in 4.6 second going up to a limited top speed of 250km/h (155mph). Also the Mercedes S63 AMG has the new AMG developed 7-speed MCT Multi Clutch Technology semi-automatic transmission. The new MCT transmission is essentially the 7G-Tronic transmission without a torque converter. Instead of a torque converter, it uses a compact wet startup clutch to start the car off, and also supports computer-controlled double declutching. The MCT (Multi-Clutch Technology) acronym refers to a planetary (automatic) transmission’s multiple clutches and bands for each gear. The MCT is fitted with four drive modes:“C (Comfort), S (Sport), S+ (Sport plus) and M (Manual) and boasts 100 millisecond shifts in M mode. the new car features the new AMG DRIVE UNIT with innovative Race Start function. The AMG DRIVE UNIT is the central control unit for the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and all driving dynamics functions. The driver can change gears either using the new AMG selector lever with its leather/ carbon-fibre finish, or by nudging the AMG steering-wheel shift paddles. The new Race start Function is basically a launch control system which enables the Mercedes S63 AMG driver to call on maximum acceleration, while ensuring optimum traction of the driven wheels. A modified version of the Mercedes S63 AMG is the safety car for the 2008 Formula One season.

Mercedes-Benz C216

Mercedes-Benz-C216The new model was officially unveiled at the end of June 2006 and was presented at the 2006 Paris Salon. The W216 is offered in four models, the V8-powered CL500, the high-performance V8-powered CL63 AMG and the high-end V12-powered CL600 and CL65AMG . The CL500 is sold as the CL550 in North America. The class is based on the chassis of the W221 S-Class and shares similar design cues together with the CLS-Class. The two-door coupe weighs 2185 kg (4817 lb) and like its predecessor, has no B-pillar interrupting the sleek curve of the side windows. The C216 makes use of the Distronic Plus cruise control, which debuted on the 2007 S-Class. This system is able to bring the car to a complete stop, and accelerate again to the pre-set speed, to keep a pre-set distance away from the car ahead of it. This Mercedes-Benz CL has also debuted with the new Active NightVision program that enables drivers to view the conditions in front of the car despite the dark surroundings. Mercedes has no plans to upgrade the 5.5L motor in the CL500/CL550 because it is already class leading, even with its older SOHC design.

Mercedes W210

Mercedes W210Mercedes-Benz W210 is a mid-size luxury car / executive car. The W210 signified the entrance of Mercedes Benz into a new era in which they were to appeal to a younger market segment. The use of four separate headlights on the car’s front end was a significant departure from longstanding Mercedes design conventions, with some critics labeling the new model the “Four-Eyed Benz.” The W210 was an extremely successful model. There were 4 engines that AMG used in the W210. The first was the E36, M104.995, launched in 1996 then the M119.985 in the Euro Spec E50 AMG produced only one year 1997. There was also an option for the M119.985 that was bored out to 6.0L the cars these were fitted to were designated as the E60 and came in sedan and wagon varieties. In 1998 came the M113 powered E55 which used a 5.5L v-8 SOHC 24V to produce 354 bhp (264 kW) and 391 ft·lbf (530 N·m) of torque. The body styling on all of the W210 AMG models was the same until 2000 when a facelift and interior upgrades were implemented.

Mercedes W211

Mercedes W211The Mercedes-Benz W211 series entered production in 2002. They are sold under the E-Class model names. The W211 models replaced the W210 E-Class models. The W211 E-Class continues the line’s push upmarket. The W211-based W219 CLS-Class was new for 2005. In 2001 Mercedes made a facelift for the W210 which began the launch of the W211. Although this was a complete facelift for the sedan, the wagon retains the rear of the W210 vehicles, except that it is slightly more rounded. The E63 AMG is a new model for 2007 offered in Sedan and Wagon body styles. It features an AMG designed and built 6,208-cc, DOHC, 32-valve V-8. This engine has a high-pressure die-cast alloy cylinder block with twin-wire arc spray coated running surfaces. It develops net horse power of 507 hp (378 kW) @ 6,800 rpm and net torque 465 lb·ft (630 N·m) @ 5,200 rpm. Compression ratio is 11.3:1. According to many auto journalists, the E63 AMG is the quickest production sports sedan in the world. Both the Sedan and Wagon reach 60 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in 4 seconds flat. The main reason for the power upgrade from the E55 AMG is directly related to BMW’s introduction of the 500 hp (370 kW) M5, and the release of the 2007 Audi RS6, boasting in excess of 550 hp (410 kW).

Mercedes W212

Codenamed Mercedes W212, the next-generation E-Class will arrive for the 2010 model year, with the estate version (codenamed S212) expected for 2011. Although not much information has been offered in regards to the upcoming fifth-generation Mercedes E Class, sources are speculating an increase of around 20 mm in length. That, combined with a redesigned interior, will offer a more spacious feel to the passenger compartment. An all-new instrument cluster, along with S-Class night-vision technology and an updated COMAND system will highlight the interior changes. Power-wise, it looks as if the full-range of Mercedes engines will be available, in diesel and petrol variants, although there may be limits in developing markets. The basic powerplant will consist of four-cylinder engines with the horsepower rating starting at 175 bhp, followed by 6 and 8 Cylinders and the performance-built AMG variant.

Mercedes R-Class

Mercedes R-ClassThe R-Class is an MPV/SUV crossover automobile offered by Daimler AG in 2006. The R-Class is offered in two wheelbases, 2980 mm (117.3 in) and 3215 mm (126.6 in). Models using BlueTec Diesel engine with urea injection will be introduced for the 2009 model year. The AMG version of the W251, the R63 AMG, was introduced at the 2006 North American International Auto Show as a 2007 model. It features a handbuilt 6.2 L M156 V8 engine producing 503 hp (375 kW) and 465 ft·lbf (630 N·m) of torque. Mercedes-Benz’s 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission is standard, but the R63 features AMG-calibrated shift times with shifting buttons on the back of the steering wheel. The R63 AMG is electronically limited to a top speed of 155 mph (249 km/h), with 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds. It is sold exclusively through special orders.

Mercedes W221

Mercedes W221The all-new Mercedes W221 was introduced in the autumn of 2005 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, with export to other markets beginning in 2006. The Mercedes W221 S-Class made its North American premiere at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in January. The latest S-Class is slightly larger in all dimensions than its predecessor, and it features a more luxurious, Maybach-like appearance, as well as three newly developed engines with up to 26% power increase. The interior is completely new, all materials have been upgraded and make for a more luxurious ride, and the center-mounted transmission has been replaced with a column-shifter. The brakes continue to become more advanced with the new Brake Assist Plus system monitoring for an impending collision and increasing braking if needed, while the Distronic Plus cruise control can now bring the car to a complete stop. This system works in outdoor conditions; a test demonstration by Mercedes-Benz in a crash-test hall resulted in embarrassment for the company when a new S-Class crashed into the back of a stationary Mercedes W220 S-Class, an incident later attributed to radar-confusing steel in this hall.

Mercedes-Benz W220

The Mercedes-Benz W220 was a series of flagship sedans which constituted the Mercedes-Benz S-Class during the early-to-mid 2000’s. The W220 (and similar W215 CL-Class coupes) started production in 2000. The W220 was a replacement for the earlier W140 S-Class after the 1999 model year. Compared to its predecessor, the W220 had somewhat smaller exterior dimensions but offered more interior space, particularly in the long wheelbase versions (although the boot is smaller than on its W140 predecessor). Production of the W220 totaled 485,000 units, slightly more than the production totals from the W140. Production ended in 2006 when the W220 and W215 were replaced by the W221 S-Class and the W216 CL-Class. In many European countries, the diesel S320 CDI version became the most popular model, making it the first S-Class in which a diesel engine achieved broad appeal. The W220 was available with more engine options than the W126 or W140. The range started with a smaller 2.8L 197 hp (147 kW) V6 motor, although this model was not imported in all countries. Very popular was the 3.2L 224 hp (167 kW) V6, which was superseded by an enlarged 3.7L 245 hp (183 kW) V6 in the S350. The S430 was powered by a 4.3L 279 hp (208 kW) V8 and the S500 was powered by a 5.0L 306 hp (228 kW) V8. The S55 AMG (‘01-’02) was outfitted with a 5.4L 354 hp (264 kW) V8 motor while the later versions (‘03-’06) sported the same motor, but supercharged to a rated 493 hp (368 kW). The S600 (‘01-’02) was outfitted with a 5.8L 362 hp (270 kW) V12 engine while the later versions (‘03-’06) sported a twin-turbocharged (or Bi-Turbo) 493 hp (368 kW) 5.5L V12.

Mercedes CLK GTR and CLK DTM

Mercedes CLKThe Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR was a V12 midengine race car developed for the 1997 FIA GT championships. It shared only lights and other exterior similarities with the normal CLK. Production of the required 25 road cars began in late 1998. A special version of the CLK is the CLK DTM AMG sports car, which looks similar to the full race car for the German Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters racing series which has to use a normally aspirated 4.0 L V8, limited to less than 500 hp. 100 Coupés and 80 Convertibles were released for sale in Europe, using AMG’s supercharged 5.4 L V8, now producing 428 kW (582 PS) and 800 N·m (590 ft·lbf). The front and rear track are widened by 2.9 and 4.2 inches (74 and 110 mm) respectively, and special tires and suspension modifications allow the car to pull 1.35 g (13 m/s²) of lateral acceleration. 0-100 km/h acceleration is just 3.9 seconds, and top speed is 320 km/h (199 mph). In Germany, the car cost 236,060 euro after taxes. In addition to hard top CLK DTM AMG, 80 convertible versions of CLK DTM were made for 2006 model year, titled Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet. Compared to the coupé version, a speed limiter further reduces its top speed to 300 km/h (likely due to the top not able to withstand higher wind forces safely). Owners of the CLK DTM Cabriolet includes former McLaren Mercedes Formula One drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Mika Hakkinen. Hakkinen is currently racing for Mercedes in the DTM championship. Former McLaren Mercedes Formula One driver Kimi Raikkonen owns the hard top version of the CLK DTM.

Mercedes R171

Mercedes R171The R170-platform SLK 230 Kompressor was introduced in 1997 for model year 1998 to compete with the Porsche Boxster and BMW Z3. Setting it apart was its folding hardtop, though its additional weight dented the performance of the 185 hp 2.3 L supercharged I4 engine and automatic transmission. The SLK was on Car and Driver’s Ten Best list for 1997. A 5-speed manual transmission was added for 1999, but it was the introduction of a 215 hp 3.2 L V6 and 6-speed manual transmission in the 2001 SLK 320 that really brought the Sportlich to the car. An AMG model was added in 2001, with a 354 hp (264 kW) supercharged version of the 3.2 L V6. This SLK 32 AMG was the best-performing SLK ever, and was a direct rival of the BMW M Roadster and Porsche Boxster S. It is only offered with automatic transmission. The SLK AMG engine is also hand built. Not all Mercedes SLKs were built in Bremen, Germany, the SLK 320 being built in South Africa. The very first R170 Mercedes SLK was completed Models of the new SLK include:

- SLK 200 Kompressor – 1.8 L 120 kW (163 hp DIN) I4 supercharged engine, 0-100 km/h (62 mph) 7.9 seconds, top speed of 143 mph. (not available in Canada and the US)
